Naturopathic Medicine is a hybrid between the old and the new. It consists of both modern-day diagnostics and traditional healing methods. It recognizes the person as a whole and that all aspects of an individual must be functioning properly for true health to be accomplished. If you have a headache, wouldn't it be better to figure out why and eliminate the cause than to suppress the symptoms?
Naturopathic Medicine has six basic principles: First Do No Harm (Primum No Nocere) Treatments are meant to help the patient in their journey towards health. Any therapies should be working with the body, not against it.
The Healing Power of Nature (Vis Mediatrix Naturae) Every person has a healing power within them. In simple terms, your body knows what it is doing and most of the time we should simply be there to help. Things like proper diet, exercise, and stress reduction techniques are all ways of helping your body to perform optimally.
Treat the Cause (Tolle Causam) Covering up symptoms, while occasionally necessary, is generally not a healing endeavor and often times makes the problem worse in the long run.
Heal the Whole Person (Tolle Totum) Every person is a complex network of different systems. It is impossible to look at one system without considering every other system. The physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being must all be taken into account in order to achieve ultimate health.
Doctor as Teacher (Docere) The doctor is not there to tell you what to do (really!). They are there to educate you and give you options. Your health is your responsibility. I am here as a source of information and to offer recommendations. The final decision is yours and you will be supported in the choices you make.
Prevention Always the best form of medicine. Taking time today to be good to your body is the best thing that you can do for tomorrow, both physically, emotionally, and financially. One study showed that spending $1 in preventative care saved $4 in healthcare later on.
Naturopathic treatments follow the “therapeutic ladder”. This method of treatment is so important to me that I based my logo after it. It is founded on the principle that you should start with the therapies that are the most gentle and basic. If these options don’t work you then look at options that are slightly more intense and work your way up the ladder, with the most invasive and harmful therapies as a last resort.
